I don't understand this. Apple has carried a 20" monitor as their low end for two years. Why offer something even smaller after so long? This seems like a step backwards. Why not reduce the 20" to $399 and lower the price of the other two? Dell is putting major price pressure on Apple with their monitors; though they are not as good looking, the price has no doubt won over many would be buyers...not me of course. :p

Well, see... there's this little thing called market analysis and listening to the people you sell things to. I highly doubt Apple was sitting around going "we need to release something new because its been months. I know! How about a different monitor size!"

Why not reduce the 20" to $399? Why should they when they seem to be selling just fine at where they are?

Dell is putting IMAGINED price pressure on Apple with their monitors. Selling cheaper crap will cost you less.

If they use WiFi with the new iPods, they'll need a chunky battery. When I still used a PDA, the battery life nose dived when you turned on the WiFi. . .

My Nintendo DS lasts pretty long, even if I'm using WiFi.. and if it's just for Music download, WiFi won't be turned on all the time

iOS and Mac OS will merge. Very slowly over the years. Eventually, I see OS X dying out and becoming a comapatibility mode like Classic, as iOS (which is still OS X at heart anyway) becomes the mainstream OS. But this will take a LONG time.

As that happens, I expect Apple desktops will evolve into flat screens that lie on the surface in front of youmaybe slanted a bit, but not vertical (though they could tilt up for passive movie viewing). This sounds great to me! I can imagine Photoshop etc. with a whole new UI, and a future iOS adapted to big screens by allowing multiple apps on-screen at once. (And keyboards will probably be standardthese are production machines used for mass content creation, and with a need for shortcuts. But mice will be optional, since only old Mac software will use them.)

These machines will be like pro/prosumer versions of the iPad, used for totally different purposes. Eventually. 5 years? Will they even be called Macs? (I suspect they will beand fair enough, if they have an OS X compatibility mode.)

In the meantime, I dont see conventional iMacs with touchscreens. Touch on a vertical surface is a harmless gimmick at best (ask HP). And they give you Popeye Arm Syndrome!

That leaked desktop touchpad, though, sounds greatI hope it ships!

I think this might be exactly where desktops are going. They will actually be desktops.

From what I understand that was Steve Job's doing. The guy made a separate simple movie app, and Jobs liked it so much he decided to make it the new iMovie.

I remember the keynote... He was on vacation and wanted a super easy way to edit his home movie. So he whipped up this "new" program to do it. Steve liked it and it became iMovie. And in the process threw 50 years of video editing out the window. Great if you've never edited before, but if you want to edit, iMovie isn't an option. If you want to slap together a super quick video, it's almost faster to cut and paste clips in a QT7 window then use iMovie now.
Speaking of that. I really hope they fix QTX today also, at least bring it up to par with QT7 in features.

Thats crazy! no way do Computers (outside of Apple) overlap ALL THE TIME.

Of course computer lines overlap. Check the other online stores, and not the apple online store every 5 minutes and you would know this. Think about it, they almost have to! How many different models does Dell or HP sell at any given moment? How many choices does one need to narrow down? You can customize something like 11-12 machines on other sites, that are all very comparable, IMO

What are you talking about? iTMS not generating profit? Geez, check your facts!

You are the one in need of fact checking. Jobs has said in a number of interviews that iTMS will generate enough money to basically break even. iTMS is there to sell iPods, not to make a profit.

What makes you think that it "can't run software"? Current 32bit CPU's will be usable for years to come.
The worry is that in a few years interesting software applications will only come in x64 - companies will drop the fat binaries due to the expenses associated with multiple versions of the software.

This is already happening on the Windows side - several major apps will only be x64 in their next versions.

So, not only can the 64-bit chip be significantly faster when in 64-bit mode - it is more future-proof.

That's not clever at all. You'd still be stuck with the Intel GPU on the internal screen.

Not if they redesign the Macbooks so the video signal goes back the other way down the thunderbolt cable and directly to the display.

    Although using a 2GB HD 6970 on a 1280x800 display is a bit silly.

consolidated.db is in a protected area of iOS, normally inaccessible to users, unless the phone is jailbroken.
The existence of this file has been known for years, just that some moron decided to make a big issue out of it. There are iphone forensics books that talk about this file, dating from at least two years back.

AFAIK, the purpose of this file is mainly to track the location of the cell towers. If you pay attention to the video released, you'll notice that around the locator cursor appear some other random points, changing as the subject moves. Those should be the cell towers.

The approach to gather this file is by accessing the iTunes backup of the phone on the computer itself. This file is encrypted, but someone with access to the computer can find the keys and decrypted. There are already available some tools to do that.

In the end, a user careless enough to let their enemies access their computer and phone deserves to get hacked. There's no way around it, everything is hackable.

I could never get enticed into high end, multi-purpose glasses unless they came bundled with OS X and I could navigate through it using just my mind. :)

Especially when you take into account that all designer sunglasses and big brands like Oakley are made in the same factory in Italy...

What you are possibly forgetting is that although, yes, Apple's market share may be shrinking, the market it self - the number of units actualy shifted - is growing at massive rates. I don't really have to explain percentages now do I, it is obvious that 1.7% or whatever it is of 10,000,000 (a figure pulled from the air, I have NO idea how many units are shifted :)) is a much higher number than say 5% of 1,000,000. Apple is shifting more units - may not be computers, iPods are obviously helping Apple to succeed, and do remember that some of these iPod users are going to like the thing so much that they start taking a healthy interest in the rest of Apple's product range.

yes, iPod out sold CPU's this quarter... But they still don't make as much money, as they are cheaper. the 807 thousand ipods sold this quarter count for only 15% of Apple's profit, whereas the 779000 (around that) (up 5% from this quarter last year) count for more then 45% of thier profit..

    Intriguing.

Maybe the Air branding is taking a que from the sucess of one of Apple's international partners, O2.

It's certainly something different from the obvious nano/mini/thin branding that people are expecting.

    Thats very cool !

I see high chance to even better Results ...

    1. Look for People which wait for the Mac Pro (its me and at least 3-4 of my friends, 2 of them Switchers)
    2. iPod no major new features (New model will boost Sales)
    3. More Stores ---> more People who learn about Macs and try them out (50% new to mac in stores) ----> Here is much Space in Europe ecspecially in Germany !!! Every 11 or 12 PC user knows Mac or OS X, some know Apple cause of the iPod ....
    4. The Good old guys which wait for Revision 2 of a Mac :D

You never know. The same thing happened with the fat Nano rumor:

There's not even a tiny chance that Apple would release something that daft.
