I know how to drive a manual, but it has been ages since last time I have been in one

    Same here.

I've had a flat-head Ford (stearing column shift), Chevy Cavalier, Porsche, Chevy Corvair Corsa , with some autos in between, and ever since.

When you drive to/from Toronto all the time, standard just makes no sense, now that autos are much more efficient.

Front Row is already setup to be a home-theatre replacement. I mean come on, it's basically an HDTV...it's 1080p, it's got a remote, and it's got front row... This will sell like crack... Digital crack...

I agree. If this rumor is true, this will be my next computer. I'm shopping for an LCD TV and a computer. A 23-inch iMac would cover both for me nicely. Fingers crossed.

Ok, its looking good to me. I might have buyers remorse when the pro touch version appears but thats likely to be quite expensive and a Rev A with some expensive very new bits that I can probably do without.

    Heh.

    Suck it, Microsoft

I watched a television show on the history of video games a couple of weeks ago. I forget what channel it was on...History or Discovery or something like that, but I specifically remember them saying that Microsoft lost a lot of money on the xbox, but that they didn't care...they just wanted to get their foot in the door.

I think it was this show:
    http://games.ign.com/articles/744/744878p1.html

Just last week I was watching Larry King interview Bill Gates & one the topics was the first gen xbox & Bill Gates said they broke even on the xbox but still considered it a success because they had a good position in the market.

Keeping weight down is all-important. Which is why I remain in love with the Lotus Elise. It proves that less weight fixes everything - better handling, acceleration, braking, fuel economy...of course in a hybrid, the battery pack is always the vexed question. Even the best batteries are still expensive and relatively heavy.

But even the Elise isn't immune, it's all relative of course, but it's gained roughly 170kg since the Series 1.

But along with aerodynamics... it's perhaps the most important factor in, as you say... handling, acceleration, braking, fuel economy... pretty much everything.

When you think how innovative a car like the Audi A2 was, I do find the lack of real progress over the last 12 years particularly sad. 10 years ago, the A2 was a sub 1000kg (sub 900kg in certain trim) proper 4 seater, its 3 cylinder TDI engine could easily achieve 70+mpg imp without even trying (according to Wiki 107.8 mpg & 140 mpg imp were also achieved).

The 1.2 TDI version emitted 81g/km CO2, featured Stop/Start, an Eco mode that disengaged the clutch when the accelerator was released to maximise free wheeling and was rated at 94mpg.

And this was 10 years ago...

In many ways, it's shameful today that we think that 60 or even 70mpg is somehow remarkable for a family car. :(

the Cruze diesel, which may be able to equal or exceed the new Jetta TDI's level of equipment, refinement and pricepoint.

But not the brand image... that could perhaps be the biggest stumbling block of all, it certainly is in Europe anyway.

Personally... I don't think GM have a clue, and that's one of the reasons why they got themselves into one almighty hell of a mess, and only time will tell if they can get themselves out of it. I'm still of the opinion that GM's decision to attempt to introduce Chevrolet into the European market will ultimately prove futile.

Here in the US, the sedan (saloon) is king, even on smaller cars like the Focus and Corolla. That is slowly beginning to change, but Americans still like three-box cars over hatchbacks. Personally I prefer hatchbacks and wagons, though larger cars still look good as sedans.

Have to say my preference is for saloons... occasionally an estate (particularly A4 & A6 allroads, also 159 Sportwagons, that sort of thing), hatches (the bigger ones anyway) & estates can/tend to be a little boomy in my experience. Saloons also often have better body rigidity too.

Turn on a TV, read a newspaper, or go online and check out the news...Japan is having a national disaster over there affecting the ability of workers to get to work, not to mention eat uncontaminated food.

No work by workers, means no products made. No products made, means no supply for anyone, including Apple.

Wake up count-chocula, no hype just the reality of the world Peter pan. Im sure the people of Japan are very sorry for causing you to be annoyed.

    Unbelievable!

Cranking up the hype machine when the product is out of stock every where is classic Apple.

    Annoying.

I may be talking out of my ass here, but my understanding is that Sirius works via satellites in geosynchronous orbit, which means they are way way up there, "locked in" above a specific spot on the ground (they zip around the Earth once every 24 hours, which keeps them above the equatorial spot that is also zipping around a full rotation in 24 hours).

Here is a map of the Sirius satellite orbits. You can get a signal pretty far south, at least as far as southern Mexico. But to conserve power, Sirius shuts the power down once the bird goes "below" the equator. XM does have a owership in WorldSpace which does broadcast around the globe through a network of various satellites.

The most obvious reason behind the name MacBook Air for me is the removal of the wired Ethernet connector to the MacBook. There is two thing that prevent from making a very slim notebook: an optical drive and an ethernet connector (look at the ethernet connector on a MacBook, it take most of the height of the notebook).

So the MacBook Air would be the first Apple notebook having only a wireless connection...

And I agree that it will be made of aluminium...

    FrenchMac

This sounds right to me about the Ethernet port, and possibly the also-large modem port being gone as well, but I bet there will be some way (a base station thinger or a USB device of some kind) that allows you to use Ethernet if you need to. How else would you set up an Airport with it?

I wonder if people will start calling it an "Air"? As in, "I'm using my Air to check all my emails from dudes pretending to be women on myspace." I'm not sure that sounds so good to me, but I like the name otherwise.

Also, I thought for sure they were going to call the iPod Touch the "airPod." Maybe they were reading my posts. Probably not, though.

I think there are quite a few users who think the same and would like to see a downgraded Mac Pro for switchers who can then keep some of their hardware.
And Intel makes a chip just for that market segment - the Conroe. :D

    Just curious, Why?

    1. Bluetooth car audio systems
    2. Bluetooth headphones
    3. Bluetooth speakers.

The iPod is primarly an audio device, Bluetooth is a common audio transmission method. What more is there to say?

    Here is a local thread:

:apple:Nice, about time. I am interested is seeing how it turns out.

Maybe I'm behind with the times, but I have no idea what OpenCL is. Apple has been known for supporting their standards no matter what sometimes.

OpenCL is the open version of GPGPU (if that helps any). It is ran by Khronos, just like OpenGL. What OpenCL would allow you to do is offload computations to any compatible device (in the is case we are focusing on GPUs) with CPU fall back (just like OGL). It is done because in some cases the GPU is faster than the CPU is (like say Folding@HOME, or encoding video).

Do you think GM would confirm an internet report of a diesel Cruze coming? Unless it comes from themselves, they won't confirm anything.

True. So far it's mostly rumor - the only thing we can be reasonably sure about is that GM is considering the idea of bringing the diesel here. Whether it will actually happen is still anybody's guess.

Hope the new mac minis have a new face... since the change to intel it's been all pretty much the same, the macbook pro and the mac pro are almost identical to the old ones:(

Come on apple get CREATIVE:pThere is nothing "identical" between G5 PowerMacs and the Mac Pro. MPs have two optical drawers and additional USB2 and FW800 ports on the front and inside they are radically different. As for the perforated aluminum? I love it and hope they keep it that way forever. It has an important functionality to maximize air intake and provide some natural hot air disipation as well.

I agree the pro laptops need a black anodized aluminum makeover with an easy access HD bay like on the MacBook. :)

All I'm saying is that behind the scenes when you look at the facts, there's a different story and you can't take everything at face value...and you should know that about politicians too. I think some of you are "glad" that it's finally not purely lead by the US and this is like some "dream team" thing. But I'm just afraid that you are just in denial. :cool:What exactly are you trying to say? Iraq was a US war of choice, and Bush was fortunate to have an equally vainglorious partner-in-crime in Blair or he'd never have been able politically to do it. Afghanistan was also a US thing. Why would anybody else take a lead in those? Libya was a UN thing, and on Europe's border, so naturally the impetus came from Europe, and Europe is taking proportionately much more of the load.

Next you'll be saying that the US won WW1 and WW2.

They shipped the XServe but there is no longer an XServe Cluster node model. Apple used to ship a stipped down XServe with only one drive. You used to be able to get dual processors in the Cluster Node for the price of a single Proc XServe [proper].
The Cluster nodes had better price/performance but they weren't designed for running real 24x7 server tasks.

    ffakr.

Ah, I see... But then again, you have more config options if you talk to one of Apple's business consultants and you can configure an Xserve with no drives if you'd like. Not sure what else the prior cluster node configurations had though, I guess I was unaware of their existence -- never saw them on the site, but I didn't really look.
