    Whatever happened to Command-Delete?

....this is starting to look like Aero in Windows Vista.

    See any similarities?

    Image (http://thecustomizewindows.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/How-to-remove-the-confirmation-prompt-to-delete-any-file-in-Windows-7-2.png)

Uh, no not much... especially considering deleting an image is NOTHING like deleting an application.

Anyone know if the 'phantom windows' bug is fixed (where minimised windows would appear while switching spaces)? for me it's the only thing that made DP1 unusable. Sorry if it's already been asked.

NO... they do not "have it already".
It's still in the opposition phase. No registration has been granted.
    Image (http://sites.google.com/site/wjohnstone/appstoretm.jpg)

Learn how to read TESS and understand the coding.

Apple is filing a preemptive lawsuit against Amazon.
This is perfectly normal for anyone who is going through the trademark process.
The lawsuit's merits will be determined by the outcome of the opposition phase from the USPTO.

Now step away from the keyboard.

Yes Apple was given approval to use the trademark but not the final awarding of the trademark. See my other post. I acknowledged this.

And I'm still at my keyboard.

Thank you for saving me the time to post this.

    There is NO trademark yet.

Yes I was wrong and discovered the error.

Must we get involved in this? Can't France do something for once by themselves, or any other european nations for that matter? When was the last time they even fired a weapon? You know, the taliban were once known as freedom fighters too. I'm so sick of these countries, let them self destruct, maybe some day they will choose to civilize themselves. Please, no more US to the rescue, and then they all wonder why many Americans have a feeling of exceptionalism.

France actually opened the subject of the no fly zone before the US & the UK.

As for other European nations, they fired and are still firing their weapons in the region, with the US forces.

The US, as the UK & France, have major interests in the region (oil, weapons, influence and such), hence the need to be there to protect these assets.

    Not this easy.

It's not so much about finding people at any moment, but knowing where they've been. And this file makes it dirt simple to find that out.

A guy in your terrorist cell claims he's not FBI, because he's never been to Washington DC. Even his phone contacts are all people nowhere near there. Yet what if his cache list says otherwise. He's probably dead.

By now, you also know that I always speak from personal experience when possible.

I was Military Intelligence and NSA in the heart of the Cold War. I did undercover field work at times. This kind of easy info is both priceless and dangerous. I've seen field officers compromised in almost every way imaginable. My scenarios are not stretches by any means.

Sorry, I just don't buy it. Isolated examples dependent upon a very rare set of circumstances that the average user won't encounter. I *do* believe your experience, you're very well versed when it comes to tech and no doubt well-treavelled, but this is just too much of a stretch. Yes, it's possible. But it's also possible to gain the same information in much more common and easier ways, instead of the super-spy scenario. I'm not sure how your terrorist cell example applies to anything relevant (or dangerous) for the average, everyday person.

I'm pretty sure your average FBI agent's iPhone (assuming they carry around iPhones) that has been cleared for use (and very likely modified) by the FBI can be stripped right down forensically and will have revealed absolutely nothing.

The average user who is *not* a secret agent really has nothing to be in up in arms about, provided they haven't just knocked off a bank or killed someone.

Well, they don't necessarily need to field troops that shoot rifles. Having a ground force can mean a lot of different things, including spec ops. I think one feasible solution may be to have US troops field artillery. This might be one of those opportunites to test "smart artillery" on those trenches near civilians and hospitals. They might also try to blow up more tanks so they can sell them more refurbished M1 Abrams later. I think smart artillery is more economical than aerial bombing runs to blow up some cheap russian tanks.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M982_Excalibur

That would be one option. I've said all along that the amount of firepower available to NATO forces is overkill! They are fighting an outdated force which has suffered massive desertion. I've seen these smart shells before, they are very good.

Special Ops are already on the ground, although not officially of course! According to anonymous sources UKSF have been on the ground since well before the airstrikes began, I'm sure the US is the same. I don't really count special forces as having troops on the ground, they are quite different. The UK also has 800 Royal Marines (sort of half way between US Marines and Navy SEALS) on short notice to deploy in the case of a humanitarian crisis.

PS: Why is leaving behind a text file so you can easily restore your settings a bad thing?

Could someone please elaborate for the not-yet mac user what exactly we're talking about when bickering over left files and folders? Are we just talking about one folder with files that might be useful if you re-install the program? If so, then I would say that this is a VERY important feature to have, when you have such a simple uninstall feature as dragging to the trash. Sometimes you do things by mistake, and yes, sometimes you don't realize your mistake until 5 seconds after you emptied the bin. Isn't this app-cleaner stuff just about not having the "hassle" of finding that folder and manually deleting it? Like others, I don't see how Windows is better in this regard, in any way. Lots of windows programs leave folders after uninstall, that you need to remove manually. The fact that windows, to my knowledge, _don't have_ an "app zapper" - simply because installs are too varied and complicated for such a program to work - tells me that the Mac way is better. It's not about Windows not needing such a program, it's about Windows being poorly programmed so that such a program wouldn't actually work very well.

I DO want a Windows "app zapper", that makes sure that I can install and uninstall a program, and then return my system to the exact same state as before. (Well, basically, I guess I want a Mac...)

i'm not too surprised if this holds true.

    1. renting a movie make sense if it's a good quality. you don't buy the movie when you go to a cinema. for someone like myself, a stay-at-home Dad, i often want to hit the theatre, but with 2 kiddies and a home business....not alot of time....but i could dload a movie while the kids are eating lunch/having a nap and then watch it later :) hey, it just bleeds further into developing an impatient society :) ie. . I want it NOW :)

    2. of course the movie execs don't want ppl to buy a dloaded movie b/c dvd sales are insanely massive. dvd sales/marketing are now part of the ENTIRE movie process starting at pre-production. they want us to spend the $20 - $30 per dvd and higher for box sets

    3. I believe Jobs doesn't want to push the movie execs. they see how the music biz just fought with jobs over trying to increase prices. they want to hold the upper hand imho.

    4. i'm joining the whining about not releasing tv shows/movies in other countries. i'm in canada and would love to dload tv shows which i don't get a chance to see. i understand there are legal implications, but i would think that a lg amount of the groundwork would have been done with the music? (I know there may be different issues, but it's driving me nuts :)

Either way, i hope apple does something. they need to lead the charge. people want it.

    cheers,
    keebler

Ahh crippling like using inferior Gpu's like in ProMac & Mini? Both GMA950 & 7300 are bottom tier.

The 7300GT is a lot better than the name implies. It's more like a 7600 light than a regular 7300. Specs are significantly better for this card than the Radeon x1600 the iMacs use.

Are the Yonah chips being phased out now that Merom is coming on line?

I would think the same fab would produce the Merom chips...

Yes. Any yonahs around would probably be from existing stock. It's a direct replacement.

My last electric bill was $299 and change! A lot of that was because its been so damned cold (and my little old house has no insulation in the walls), colder and more snow than in many years. Folding uses power but helps with the heating :p now if I could just get those gpu's to glow a little brighter red I could turn off the furnace...

And congrats to everyone for keeping up and making points!

Hey, mc68k I might catch up... soon :D

I wonder if some people have moved to other teams? Maybe they start out with us but find another team that that appeals more to them?? I've thought about jumping to Dawkins team but it would take awhile to get where I am here so I will stay, for now at least

I just ordered this Night Sky Grip Vue from the Best buy website for local pickup. Looks pretty nice. I liked the look of the case, but hated the two colors my local BB has... the baby blue, and pink.

Up till now I've been using the 99 cent Hong Kong cases, and they work pretty well, but are lint magnets, and fall off sometimes when you stick them in or pull them out of your jean pockets.

Thanks for posting those pictures. It helped me make up my mind.

Glad you're getting one!! It fits really well and won't slip out compared to the silicone case. I don't understand why Belkin can't make some normal colors, though. The bright colors look nice, but I would NOT want to be seen around with it under certain occasions. ;)

Apple will be pushing out Thunderbolt for sure....

I wonder when the cinema displays will get the thunderbolt port for daisychaining ?

    Macbook Air with the iMac?

I think Professionals will be waiting to upgrade to hardware unless it thunderbolt ready like the MBP....huge advantage for Pro use with thunderbolt as opposed to current firewire 800.

Would you say the dermaSHOT is better?
Do you people know any good cheap(few bucks) TPU cases?

Well after using both for at least two days each I would have to say the dermaSHOT is overall a better case. It has a much more substantial feel to it, and has some nice styling to it. I also got used to the kinda squishy top button. Only real downfall to this case is that I email Insipio to inquire about any new colors planned, and they told me only one more color is planned for the near future "gold" something

The $1 case is not bad at all, pretty plane jane as far looks but I really like how the buttons feel. If you take your iPod in and out of you pocket often I would pick the dermaSHOT over the dollar case because my dollar case has a habit of falling off the sides of the iPod.

I am prob going to get two more $1 cases just for the color choices, and use these cases for my plane flights. The dermaSHOT will be my EDC :)

Right. If he is going to base a decision on potential and storage then Blue Ray and HD-DVD is not really the way to go... I find it funny everyone here is oozing for Blue Ray yet Holographic has more potential...
Can I purchase a Holographic disc?

Nope not at my local BestBuy, I guess that makes it pretty hard to include. Wait... does anyone have a holographic disc.... nope ... no manufacturer.... not even researchers.... so I guess that means the timeframe for the device... is slated release with Vista or about 10 yrs from now.... which means it doesn't have a greater potential within a timeframe.

As far as what's wrong with the wifi as currently done, here:

    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/zune.ars/4

Actually that entire review is pretty good at covering why the current Zune is really not worth it, and why it has potential. The review complainsThe lameness of this dialogue is matched only by the lameness of Microsoft's decision not to allow retransmission. It's clear why usage rights on protected content need to expire, but why should that prevent users from sharing it with their friends? This is supposed to be viral how, exactly? If they allowed retransmissions, couldn't a pair of Zunes beam it back and forth to prevent ever reaching expiration? If they allowed retransmissions of purchased songs, how might they prevent this trick from being used to keep songs forever? Keeping a record of all previous songs, so it could recognize one it had before, and not permitting those records to be purged? Counting a retransmission as one of your three "plays"? Keeping the original expiration date, even if 2 of the 3 days had already gone by?

Another way to ask this question: If Apple decided to compete head-to-head with this feature, what should they do differently?
